Rather than using the exotic hardwoods featured in traditional African seating, the designer Ryan Frank chose to work with 'strawboard' - a sustainable, formaldehyde-free material made entirely from compressed straw.

The strawboard is then covered in 100% felted wool. Strawboard is a durable material that offers a sustainable alternative to plasterboard.

Ryan Frank is a South African born furniture designer living and working in East London. His collection of edgy free-range furniture makes frequent use of sustainable materials and draws inspiration from the deterioration and corrosion of the urban landscape.
Being fluid in his approach and development has meant that notably experimental and often unconventional products have emerged.

Isabella is manufactured using CNC technology cutting out profiles from strawboard, leaving minimal waste. The strawboard used is formaldehyde free which is a step in the right direction; though the binder is not yet 100% toxic free. No eco-binder exists at the moment which is moisture proof , provides good bonding properties and is toxic free.

The use of Strawboard as a by-product of the agricultural industry provides an inspiring alternative to the use of wood.

Isabella is locally and ethically made in the UK using local materials.

To properly dispose of Isabella stool, separate the felt material from the strawboard material. The strawboard should be broken apart and composted naturally with a sufficient amount of moisture present.

Felt is also biodegradable and can be composted. Biodegradation is the process by which organic substances are broken down by living organisms. Composting converts biodegradable waste into compost.
